How to prepare your property before we arrive

Home/Resources/Prep Before We Arrive

Twenty minutes of preparation on your side saves machine-time on ours, which saves money on your invoice. Here’s the whole list.

Two weeks out

Call Alabama 811.

Free, required, and it needs a few working days. Water, gas, power, cable and fibre all run shallow.

Write down your private lines.

811 doesn’t mark these: irrigation, invisible fence, a run out to a shed or a well pump, septic lines and the drain field. Only you know. Tell us or mark them.

Confirm your permit if one is needed.
Check covenants.

Subdivision tree restrictions are common and enforced privately.

The week before

Mark what stays.

Flagging tape or spray paint on every tree you’re keeping. Bright colour, at eye height, visible from the direction the machine will approach. Don’t rely on ‘the big one near the corner’, from a cab it all looks similar.

Mark what must not be touched.

Well heads, septic lids, survey pins, buried tanks, a headstone, a memorial tree. Anything you’d be upset about.

Walk the boundary if you know it.

If you don’t, say so, we won’t guess. Survey line clearing.

Look at the access.

A tracked machine on a trailer is heavy. Low branches over the drive, a soft culvert, a tight turn, a locked gate, tell us now.

Move anything you want kept.

Equipment, materials, fencing, a boat, scrap. If it’s in the work area, assume it’s in the way.

The day before

Unlock the gate or get us the code or a key.

Move vehicles well clear of the work area. Machines throw debris.

Tell your neighbours.

A machine on a rural road at 7am is a surprise worth avoiding. It costs nothing and it prevents most complaints.

Plan for pets and livestock.

Inside, or well away, for the whole day.

Decide who's on site.

Someone who can make a decision available by phone is ideal, in person for the first thirty minutes is better.

The morning we start

Walk it with us before the machine moves.

Fifteen minutes, and it is the highest-value quarter hour of the whole job.

Take your own photographs.

Same angles we’ll use for the after shots.

Keep children and animals indoors while we work. Not negotiable.

Close windows on the downwind side.

Mulching makes dust.

The single most useful thing you can do

Mark your keepers clearly, and mark your buried lines. Nearly every problem on a clearing job traces back to one of those two, and both take twenty minutes with a can of paint.

What we bring

Everything. Machine, fuel, tools, water. We don’t need power, we don’t need your water, and we don’t need a bathroom. If we need something from you we’ll ask before the day.
