What this actually costs

Home/Pricing

Almost nobody in this trade publishes numbers. We do, for a plain reason: if your job is a $400 job, you should find that out here rather than on a phone call with a contractor who’s about to disappoint you.

Forestry mulching: priced by the acre

Density is what moves the number. Not acreage, not distance. Five acres of open pasture with scattered scrub costs less than one acre of twenty-year privet with hardwood mixed through it, and privet is what’s actually growing on a great deal of unmaintained land on this coast.

Light

$1,500-$2,000
per acre

Grass, briar, scattered saplings under 2 in. Old pasture coming back. Understory under a stand you’re keeping.

Moderate

$2,000-$2,600
per acre

Continuous undergrowth, stems to 4 in, yaupon and wax myrtle, some vine.

Heavy

$2,600-$3,000
per acre

Dense privet or titi, stems to 6 in, heavy greenbrier, poor visibility.

Severe

$3,000-$3,400
per acre

At the 7 in machine limit throughout, storm blowdown mixed in, or ground too soft to work at speed.

Production rate, so you can check the arithmetic

The ASV RT-120 with the mulching head covers roughly three-quarters to one and a quarter acres a day depending on density. That’s where the per-acre numbers come from, and it’s why a heavy acre costs what a light two acres costs.

In Mississippi

Our minimum job is $1,000. In Mississippi it’s $1,500. Getting the machine on the trailer, driving it, unloading, working, reloading and driving back is most of a day regardless of how small the patch is. Cross a state line and it’s most of a day before any work starts at all.

If your job is smaller than that, a back corner tidied, a couple of saplings, a single stump in a suburban yard, a tree service or a landscaper will serve you better and cheaper, and we’ll tell you so.

Deposits and payment

A 30% deposit is typical, and it’s stated on your written quote rather than sprung on you. Nothing is taken before you’ve seen and accepted a price. Balance on completion, after we’ve walked the finished job together. Full deposit and cancellation terms.

What moves a price up

Access.

If the machine can’t get to it without cutting a path first, the path is part of the job.

Wet ground.

Soft ground slows everything and risks rutting your property. Sometimes the right answer is to wait for a dry spell, we’ll tell you that.

Slope.

Anything steep slows production and changes how we work it.

Stem size.

The mulching head stops at about 7 inches. Above that, trees get felled first and that’s a separate line.

Debris in the ground.

Old fence wire, buried concrete, tyres, a filled-in pit. Wire in particular is hard on a mulcher head.

Trees you're keeping.

Working around retained trees is slower than clearing everything, and worth every dollar if you want shade in five years.

Distance.

No separate mobilisation line, it’s in the price. But it’s why the out-of-state minimum exists.

What we don't do

"Why is mulching cheaper than clearing if it's the same trees?"

Because of where the material ends up. Mulching grinds it and leaves it on your ground as a layer three to six inches deep. Clearing means pushing it into piles, dealing with the stumps and root plates, and then windrowing it somewhere on the property or burning it under a permit you hold.

The cutting is a fraction of the work. The handling is the job. That’s the entire difference, and it’s usually a factor of two.

Tell us what's on the ground. We'll come look at it.

Call and you get John Williams, not an answering service and not a dispatcher. If it’s after hours or a Sunday, send the form and you’ll have a text back and a callback first thing.

Before you call

Have ready
The property address or parcel number, roughly how many acres you want opened, and what's growing on it: pines, hardwood, scrub, privet.
Don't have that?
Call anyway. We can pull it up on the county parcel viewer while we're on the phone.
